"I
am convinced that it is as natural for a human being to swim as
it is for the duck. And yet, in civilized communities, how
many able-bodied individuals die, like so many drowning kittens
from the occurrence of the most trivial accident!"
Herman Melville, Typee 1846
The Swim -To - Safety
Program is a citywide initiative launched in 1999 to teach
children in New York City about the dangers of drowning and to
help them overcome the "instinctive drowning
response." This web site and its contents are offered
as an informational public service. It is intended to help users access information about organizations, programs and
locations that meet their educational aquatic needs.
The Swim-To-Safety Program is the
result of a collaboration among the New York City Council, The
City of New York Parks & Recreation, The City of New York
Board of Education, The Kips Bay Boys and Girls Club, and
other community-based organizations and facilities in the city
that have swimming pools. The program is funded by a New
York City Council budget allocation, sponsored by Bronx Borough
President Adolfo
Carrion, Jr.
